UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP CREATES RADIO FEATURE The Florida Environment is a radio feature focused on Florida's unique environment and is broadcast over a network of Florida radio stations. The program is produced in cooperation with the Southwest Florida Council for Environment Education, Inc. "Since I've lived in Southwest Florida for 36 years, Ive had time to learn to appreciate my environment," said Kevin Pierce, the programs producer and host. "Most people who live in Florida today have been here ten years or less, and they could really benefit from a better understanding of what's going on around them." The daily radio feature is a resource for citizens, students and teachers. "Efforts to educate people about Florida's environment continue to grow," said Pierce. "Teachers and students will use the radio program as a way of stimulating discussion on environment issues, and they'll find additional study materials from our website (http://www.floridaenvironment.com). For the same reasons, the program is also a great resource to Florida residents who would like more information about their environment." The daily radio program will feature interviews with people involved in the Florida environment. Using Internet audio technology, the programs website will also provide the programs audio. "We wanted to make sure that teachers and students could listen to the program at a time and place that was convenient," said Pierce. "If they dont hear it on the radio, they can listen on their computers." The website provides the scripts from the daily programs along with links to other resources for the program topics. The radio program and its resource website have strong support from the Southwest Florida Council for Environment Education. "We created our organization around one idea: supporting and promoting environment education in area schools," said Richard Anderson, president of the Southwest Florida Council for Environment Education, Inc. "This radio program and its website will be an amazing resource for students and teachers in those schools. Our involvement in the program was a natural." Guests on the programs first week of broadcasts included Florida writers who write about the states environment. Susan Cerulean and Jeff Ripple are editors of and contributors to The Wild Heart of Florida: Florida Writers on Floridas Wildlands; Al Burt is a contributor to that book and author of Tropic of Cracker. "These writers make the point that telling stories about Floridas environment is a great way to develop peoples interest in it," Pierce said. "This state is full of interesting people with a great passion for our environment. I look forward to having them on the program."
